The immigration issue is wquite complex and I do agree that it cannot wait. As we will lose the edge on the labor forcce we are also having a brain drain of the scientists abroad. But the average citizen tends to be driven by feelings manipulated by the media to create chaos and hate. Edward i wish there more people in the journalist and media world like yourself, the american way that is to make the best of the situation for everybody for a better future for our children to improve our land beyond our differences for a commo goal......a brilliant future for the US.

Great! Another political party. This is one of the biggest reoccuring problems that black people face. We are forever forming and putting our faith in groups. Groups, protesting, marching and rallies are not our salvation and only serve to antagonize. We don't seem to ever learn that by starting these groups we are repeating two of the big mistakes that are always our downfall. First, forming groups and having someone "represent" us is a form of abdicating responsibility. If every individual did what needed to be done change and improvement would be true and lasting. You know what happens in groups, people start to waver and wander. Soon they are supporters in name only. When those in position of power see an apathetic membership they begin to act on their own, for their own benefit and that always leads to abuse of power. What needs to happen is that people need to be educated on the choices they make. Voting for someone for selfish gain seends the message that hopefuls need to be about selfish gain. Whenever I say this, people always point to the gains of the early civil rights movement and the groups they formed. Well, in actuality, it was individuals that you saw getting beaten and attacked by dogs. Ordinary people who are today unsung. We give all the credit to our leaders, but it was the people in the trenches that made change happen. When you see visions of the violence of the civil rights movement you see images of people just like you and I who are being beaten down by the police, attacked by police dogs, sprayed with firehoses. The "common" person, (both male and female), had had enough of things the way they were and each one decided not to take it any more. Sure the marches got the coverage but it was the spirit of the individuals that brought about change. That is the spirit that black people need to draw upon.

Then the fault is yours. You voted for the wrong reason, probably for some gain/ benefit to yourself. This is the very reason that religion and politics do not mix. The restrictive belief of religion has held man back for centuries. Religion has also been on the wrong side of social and economic issues from the very beginning. Want to fight the power? Get you congregation to understand that it doesn't take 30 years to get their life right, if you're doing your job. Stop using religion and the church as your power base and get out there and feed some hungry and give shelter to the homeless.

As I recall, America was not built upon "Christian" principles and neither were all of the "founders" all Christians. They were mostly Deists, with Agnostics and Atheists sprinkled in, though there were a couple of Christians in the group. The time of the push for American independence was, if you check your historic timeline, during the Age of Enlightenment. The "founders" were mostly men of science and the Age of Enlightenment was their time to push out from under the yoke and oppression of the influence and intrusion of religion into our secular lives. Being that they sought freedom for all, they wanted those who were inclined to believe in religion to have the freedom to pursue the religion of their choice. Thomas Payne, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and yes, even George Washington were all Deists. As proof that they had no intention of this being a "Christian" country, please google, "1796 Treaty of Triploi", which was a treaty signed by and American president and ratified by an American congress. belief in a diety is a personal preference and should not be a prerequisite to participate in society.

This is a catch 22 situation for the residents of Oakland. Reliance upon the police to solve issues and ills in our communities is part of the cycle of dependency that has crippled our communities The simple solution is that residents, (and I mean everyone) must stop abdicating responsibility. I am speaking as a black man who has nothing but love for my people. I envision a community where we, as individuals, concentrate on doing what is right for all residents and stop being so SELF-motivated. Doing right as a member of Humanity should be as natural as breathing, but we struggle. It is sad to hear that 80 individuals have lost their source of adequately for their families (wonder how many were black?), but crime is something that can be managed and controlled at the frontline. It's not like street crimes in black communities are carried out like the other crimes perpetrated against us. Neighbors showing concern for neighbor, individuals treating one another with love and respect is the only solution to ALL negative issues facing the black community.

Thanks so much for being there, Jamila Bey. I'm a female, American, obviously descended from Africans, and I do not believe in god/gods, etc. Also, I find it EXTREMELY refreshing that you too share my belief in using reason, critical thinking, etc., to teach children instead of instruments of pain. I often feel very alone because of my beliefs but am at present seeking the company of "someone like me". I wish there was someone like you living nearby. Thanks, thanks, thanks for being there!!!!!!!!!!
