(Akiit.com) They couldn’t even be bothered to write an opinion. The Supreme Court’s six right-wing Trumpers issued a summary opinion staying a district court order, which had been upheld by the Court of Appeals, prohibiting “roving patrols” of ICE agents from stopping and seizing people based on their race and ethnicity.

That’s right: The same Supreme Court that says it’s unconstitutional to take race into account in providing educational and employment opportunities to minorities says it’s just fine to use race as a factor for detaining them. Heads you lose, tails you lose.

At least give Brett Kavanaugh credit for writing a concurrence, trying to explain the inexplicable. It doesn’t work, but how could it? Racial profiling makes statistical sense; it’s just not supposed to be how we do things.

According to Kavanaugh, “Immigration officers ‘may briefly detain’ an individual ‘for questioning’ if they have ‘a reasonable suspicion, based on specific articulable facts, that the person being questioned … is an alien illegally in the United States.'”

He said such stops are reasonable and legal based on the “totality of the circumstances. Here, those circumstances include: that there is an extremely high number and percentage of illegal immigrants in the Los Angeles area; that those individuals tend to gather in certain locations to seek daily work; that those individuals often work in certain kinds of jobs, such as day labor, landscaping, agriculture, and construction, that do not require paperwork and are therefore especially attractive to illegal immigrants; and that many of those illegally in the Los Angeles area come from Mexico or Central America and do not speak much English.”

Those were exactly the same factors — race, ethnicity, the Home Depot parking lot, speaking Spanish — that the district judge and the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said agents may not use as a basis for stopping someone for questioning. You need targeted suspicion based on individualized factors, not stereotypes.

The court’s three remaining liberals dissented. Justice Sonia Sotomayor called the decision “yet another grave misuse of our emergency docket. We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job. Rather than stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost, I dissent.”

Justice Sotomayor is right. “The Government … has all but declared that all Latinos, U.S. citizens or not, who work low wage jobs are fair game to be seized at any time, taken away from work, and held until they provide proof of their legal status to the agents’ satisfaction,” she wrote. “Immigration agents are not conducting ‘brief stops for questioning,’ as the concurrence would like to believe. They are seizing people using firearms, physical violence, and warehouse detentions,” she wrote. “Nor are undocumented immigrants the only ones harmed by the Government’s conduct. United States citizens are also being seized, taken from their jobs, and prevented from working to support themselves and their families.”

Roving patrols of masked ICE agents pouring out of rental trucks to chase people down the streets of Hispanic neighborhoods? Is this really what people were voting for when they cheered Trump’s plans to deport rapists and murderers? Clearing the Home Depot parking lots instead? This is not a targeted approach. It is an effort to meet an artificial, political goal, through the sort of race-based policing that we, in other contexts, have rightly branded as unconstitutional. Why not here?

(Akiit.com) Award-winning author, speaker, and global adventurer Lacey C. Clark is set to release her debut children’s picture book, I AM Phenomenal Everywhere! — a vibrant, inspiring story that empowers young girls, particularly Black girls, to embrace self-love, cultural pride, and global imagination.

Beautifully illustrated, the book follows the journey of a spunky young girl who learns to see herself as phenomenal no matter where she is in the world. Drawing from Clark’s real-life experiences of living on five continents as a Black woman, the book invites children to celebrate culture, joy, and curiosity while affirming that they belong everywhere.

“I wanted to give children a story that shows them that no matter their zip code, their voice and their light matter everywhere in the world,” said Clark!. “I AM Phenomenal Everywhere! is more than a book—it’s a movement of self-love and possibility.”

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-15225" src="https://www.akiit.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Press-Release-I-AM-Phenomenal-Everywhere-by-Lacey-C.-Clark-Inspires-Young-Girls.jpg" alt="Press Release: I AM Phenomenal Everywhere! by Lacey C.
Early readers are already praising the book’s impact:

“I really, really appreciate the author of the book because she is being her authentic self. The author encourages little girls to be their authentic selves without feeling judged. Girls should embrace their authentic selves without feeling like someone out there wants them to be something else. I’m so excited about the book and look forward to reading more!” — Esther, Mother of 2

“I AM Phenomenal Everywhere! is so life-affirming for our young ones, and the illustrations are so beautiful. I loved everything about it. Your added vocabulary in the glossary was perfect, and we used it. It is definitely phenomenal!” — BJ, Teacher

“This book feels like wings. It tells our girls they are enough, they are brilliant, and they can dream beyond borders.” — Early Reader & Mom

The release of I AM Phenomenal Everywhere! comes at a pivotal moment in the school year when representation in children’s literature is essential. Studies show that children who see positive reflections of themselves in books build stronger self-esteem, perform better academically, and develop greater cultural awareness.

Available for purchase on Amazon, Clark’s book is designed for classroom adoption, school libraries, and community programs. Educators, parents, and organizations are encouraged to bring this inspiring story to their communities. Wholesale orders and virtual author visits are now available.

(Akiit.com) Nationwide — Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is making a significant impact by shining a spotlight on Black cowboys and equestrian culture, not just through her music but also through her philanthropic efforts. Her foundation, BeyGOOD, has taken a deep interest in supporting the rich, yet often overlooked, history of Black cowboys, cowgirls, farmers, and ranchers. This history is vital to understanding the full narrative of the American West, yet it has been largely ignored in mainstream media and history books. By focusing on these communities, Beyoncé is helping to preserve and celebrate a crucial part of Black heritage that has shaped the American landscape.

In an effort to uplift and sustain these traditions, BeyGOOD has been partnering with the annual Bill Pickett Rodeo, a historic event that has been the heartbeat of Black cowboy culture for four decades. The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, recognized as the longest-running Black rodeo in the United States, is a crucial gathering for Black cowboys and cowgirls to showcase their skills and preserve their legacy. Through its Equestrian program, BeyGOOD has committed $500,000 in grants to support these communities, demonstrating a strong commitment to ensuring that this important cultural heritage is not lost to history.

According to WBLS, the BeyGOOD Foundation has already made a tangible impact by participating in the Los Angeles and Atlanta stops of the Bill Pickett Rodeo. At these events, the foundation awarded $25,000 in grants to various organizations that are deeply rooted in the Black equestrian community. Among the recipients were Urban Saddles, Love This Equine and Horse Rescue, The Black Cultural Enlightenment Society/Black Cowboy Festival, the South Carolina Black Farmers Coalition, and SOOFA Ranch. Each of these organizations plays a vital role in promoting and sustaining Black equestrian and agricultural traditions.

Founded by Beyoncé in 2013, BeyGOOD started as an initiative to support global causes and has now evolved into a 501(c)(3) public charity, known as the BeyGOOD Foundation. Over the past decade, BeyGOOD has engaged in numerous humanitarian efforts, from providing scholarships to addressing the water crisis in Burundi, and aiding families affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston. Beyoncé’s vision for the foundation is to continue building partnerships through innovative programs that have a lasting impact on communities around the world.

One of the youngest beneficiaries of the BeyGOOD Equestrian Grants is nine-year-old Kendall Rae Johnson, the youngest farmer in Georgia and the owner of Green Heart. Her success story is a testament to the importance of nurturing the next generation of Black farmers and equestrians. The support provided by the BeyGOOD Foundation is crucial in helping young entrepreneurs like Kendall Rae continue their work and inspire future generations.

The significance of this initiative cannot be overstated. By supporting these grants, the BeyGOOD Foundation is not just providing financial assistance; it is affirming the value of Black agricultural and equestrian traditions in the broader American story. These efforts ensure that the legacies of Black cowboys, farmers, and ranchers are recognized and celebrated, rather than forgotten. To learn more about the recipients and the work of the BeyGOOD Foundation, visit BeyGOOD.org

(Akiit.com) How much do solar, wind and electric vehicle companies get in federal handouts and tax loopholes in President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill? Well over $100 billion in taxpayer largesse. If all the tax credits are included, that number could reach half a trillion dollars. No other industry in American history has ever received this lucrative a paycheck.

The folks at the Institute for Energy Research calculated that this is on top of the more than $150 billion in subsidies these industries received from Uncle Sam in the last 30 years.

The umbilical cord to taxpayer wallets never gets cut. Yet, laughably, the left says all these subsidies to “green energy” are necessary for an “infant industry.” Really? Does Big Wind or Big Solar ever grow up? Incidentally, our ancestors were using windmills and solar panels during the Middle Ages.

So why do these renewable energies get so much money from Congress, and why do Democrats want to give them the biggest payday in the history of the Washington favor factory? Not because renewable has great promise. Thirty years after the handouts started, wind and solar accounted for less than 8% of our total energy production. It’s inconsequential.

If we taxpayers are “investors” in green energy, we’d be wondering where our return is at this point. Wind and solar costs are going down, but not nearly as fast as the cost reductions in natural gas, thanks to the shale revolution.

But now the left is trying to save its latest round of gargantuan welfare checks by arguing that the higher costs of oil and gas at the pump show that these energy sources prove that we can’t rely on fossil fuels.

It is reminiscent of the story of the boy who kills his parents and throws himself at the mercy of the court for being an orphan. Oil and gas prices are rising because Biden and the left have declared war on American fossil fuels. They aren’t allowing drilling. They instead are passing new “methane” taxes and not building pipelines.

Now liberals shake their fingers at the producers and accuse them of gouging consumers as they assault the added American oil and gas supply that would lower the prices to fill up your tank and heat your home. They are now starting a multimillion-dollar ad campaign in Washington, paid for by taxpayers, telling us that the high gas prices the Biden administration wants mean we have to stop using gas.

The irony of all of this is that the reliance on green energy subsidies is one good reason for so little technological progress in renewable energy. We’d perhaps see more innovation if the industry had to fight on a level playing field.

Democrats in Congress keep doling out the dollars because the green energy industry gives 90% of its contributions to Democrats. It is nothing more than a pay-to-play gambit.

If wind and solar are the low-cost energy sources of the future, why do they need so much government aid? Will they ever take the training wheels off?

After three decades, maybe it is time to admit the obvious: Wind and solar are niche energy sources that will not anytime soon, and probably never, provide anywhere near the energy we need for our $22 trillion industrial economy.

(Akiit.com) Students at the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and predominantly Black institutions (PBIs) will have greater access to mental health supports and resources as the result of a new partnership between the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and The Steve Fund, both organizations announced today.

The ongoing pandemic and heightened racial tensions have intensified the urgency of increasing the reach and impact of mental health programming at HBCUs and PBIs. Through its partnership with The Steve Fund, UNCF intends to launch its newly established mental health initiative with customized strategies, content, programs, resources and events all designed to build knowledge and establish a community of action around mental health and emotional well-being of students, faculty and staff on HBCU and PBI campuses.

The partnership kicked off with a survey to announce the new initiative, which was distributed to HBCU students, faculty and staff to gauge the state of mental health on HBCU campuses. The organization received responses from 342 students and 419 faculty and staff representing 47 HBCUs. Among the findings:

Students, faculty and staff all agree the top three mental health concerns for college students are: stress, anxiety and depression.

More than 65% of students shared that in a mental health crisis, they are most likely to speak to friends or family members.

While 83% of students believe their campuses are addressing mental health and well-being, 45% of students surveyed said they would not speak to anyone if they were in a mental health crisis.

An overwhelming majority of students, faculty and staff shared that they would like to keep informed on resources about mental health and well-being, yet 25% faculty/staff shared there is no training available about student mental health and wellness.

72% of students are aware of their options for mental health counseling through their college/university, but only 52% feel comfortable visiting the university counseling center when a mental health issue arises.

Nearly 70% of students expressed a desire to be informed about resources and events regarding emotional well-being. Students reported that their campuses were addressing their mental health needs moderately well to extremely well. Most faculty and staff respondents welcome increased support for and awareness of mental health resources for the entire campus community. Additionally, when asked whether or not they believed there were barriers preventing students from receiving adequate mental health care, faculty and staff were evenly split with 51% believing barriers do not exist.

“The Steve Fund is working to position UNCF students to achieve optimal mental health by equipping them with the skills, tools and knowledge they need to thrive as young adults, scholars and leaders,” says Dr. Annelle Primm, senior medical director at The Steve Fund. “Through our collaboration with the UNCF, the Steve Fund expands its important partnership with higher education to foster the emotional well-being of students of color through productive dialogue, effective policies and successful promotion of access to potent, culturally salient resources. It is imperative that the Steve Fund supports HBCUs in their critical mission. Our partnership in the mental health initiative is a strategic investment which will enhance cultivation of student potential and success.”

“As America continues to battle the pandemic, this devastating disease has revealed just how much work we must do to provide adequate support to students, faculty and staff on HBCU campuses. We already know that the students we serve, and their educators must respond to generational trauma, racism and disinvestment to thrive—each of these challenges takes a toll on student and faculty mental health. Our schools and institutions need support to develop new and sustainable ways to provide care, mentorship and compassion to its students, staff and community members,” says Dr. Michael Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF. “Through this partnership with the Steve Fund, we will begin to develop programs and resources that will help aid HBCUs and others in an effort to create an environment conducive to mental health and the emotional well-being of students.”

The objectives of the new partnership are to:

Reduce stigma and promote knowledge, dialogue, awareness and around the mental health needs of HBCU and PBI students

Engage HBCU campus leaders and mobilize a commitment to prioritize mental health support systems and services on their campuses

Provide curated mental health recommendations to help HBCU and PBI administrators support their students

Support HBCU and PBI institutions in their vitally important mission by assisting them as they promote student potential and success

Provide the necessary tools, resources and supports HBCU and PBI students need to remain or become mentally well so they can advance their personal goals to matriculate through college and become the future leaders of tomorrow

The partnership has established the following strategic activities to accomplish its goals:

The distribution of a survey to HBCU students to gauge their existing needs and perceptions of mental health on campus that will launch the partnership and inform HBCU communities.

An inaugural communications strategy fueled by data, best practice and topical thought-leadership to engage HBCU students, leaders, administrators and faculty, and elevate the urgency of mental health and emotional well-being for HBCU students, particularly during this period of heightened crisis and commensurately heightened mental health risks.

A conference will be convened in January 2022 for HBCU students including educational mental health workshops designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to maintain their mental health and emotional well-being as they navigate the educational journey and life transitions.

A first-ever mental health track for HBCU leaders at a conference in the summer hosted by UNCF’s Institute for Capacity Building that will provide insights and evidence-based tools leaders can use to help campus communities achieve and maintain mental health and emotional well-being in these unprecedented times.

(Akiit.com) Sometimes it is hard for our African American community to read, hear and observed negatives things, stereotypes and comments about our community that may hinder, discredit, belittle, humiliate, demonized and insult us; thus, affecting our ability to function like normal human beings and succeed in a society were we as a people are perceived as a threat. Nevertheless, it is necessary to hear the truth in order to be aware of our current situation in America and prepared us to be stronger, more united and willing to fight back as one entity instead of fighting individually against white supremacy and systemic racism that is prevalent in America in a subtle way today, tomorrow and always.

In simple words America has proven again and again that they rather respect and fear people who are willing to fight to the death than those that sing songs, march on the streets, complain, blocked traffic and vote democrat etc.. yet with no success or improvement. What do I mean by this statement! Well, Racist America choose to come to the table and bend the knee to the demands of a so called terrorist group called the Taliban after fighting them for over 20 years with over 10,000 deaths on the American allied side, 200,000 deaths on the enemy side and over $845 billion dollars spend in the American man made war of terrorism; but, America refuses to come to the table with black American citizens descendant of black slaves who built this country for the simple proposal of the platinum plan and reparations for slavery.

Who are the Taliban? These are people from the Middle East countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan who were born into poverty with no formal high school education or job skills but with the passion to protect their lands from European conqueror, colonialism and racist American imperialism and white supremacy spreading across their lands. This tribal people in Afghanistan have never been conquered by foreign powers in the last 2000 years but they have been occupied but never submitted or bend their knees to no foreign entity. These people of the tribal regions in Afghanistan and Pakistan came together and formed the Taliban and fought off every European invasion until they finally force racist America to withdraw their Armies of Terrors and colonialism from their lands.

The Taliban with their very old and sometimes brutal tradition and beliefs of forgotten Islamic caliphate roots did not have an Air Force, Navy, missile defense system, cyber warfare, submarines, nuclear weapons and or the capabilities to invade any country; yet, they were able to fight and fight America for 20 years without fear and to the death, which cause racist white America to realize that these people will never surrender, bend the knee or become slave and puppet to white America supremacy and systemic racism like the weak African American men and woman in America the Great. Indeed, the America government came to the conclusion that it is in the best interest of white America to leave Afghanistan and make a peace treaty and concessions to a rag dog group of backward Taliban people walking through the mountains with a towel wrapped on their heads, wearing a skirt with no underwear, no education, no alcohol, no weed, no liquor store but with an AK-47 rifle and an RPG grenade launcher.

Now, why is it that Black America cannot do the same like the Taliban and fight to the death for your rights and the rights of your fellow black brothers and sisters? Why are African Americans not following the example of the Taliban and the Vietcong or north Vietnamese people who did no have a powerful Army or weapons but they were willing to fight using anything to drive the white American imperialism and colonialism away from their lands and from their daughters and sons. For a long time and still the black community are in a arrested development mentality and under the spell of the Willie Lynch Letter and doctrine on how to keep a black men and woman a slave in their minds even though the shackles have been removed. Yes, “The Making of a Slave” for eternity in America is working and black America remains slaves to themselves.

Let’s Make a Slave, the words of William Lynch the great speech on how to control and manipulated the black men and woman for centuries to come beginning in the slavery days of dividing and conquering their minds, body’s and souls. What a magnificent piece of art created by this white demon of the west that has long been dead but his contributions to slavery and psychological manipulations of blacks continues to this day. African Americans are not willing to unite for one simple cause and neither are they willing to unite and pick up weapons and fight to protect their community, their rights and freedom from systemic racism and white imperialism that is constantly knocking at their doors in plain sight and with no respect to your or your love ones.

My Fellow African Americans brother and sitters it is time to start fighting back by any means necessary because white Ameria will never stop been racist, prejudice, bias, toward the black communities and neither will they stop killing your love ones. The racist soldiers aka white police officers and the vigilantes aka George Zimmerman will continue to profile, demonized, dehumanized, raped, killed your children while bragging about it, selling the weapon that killed your love one in an Auction and then going back on the streets to find more black children to killed, raped, incarcerated, enslaved etc… Wake up Black America you are loosing, we are loosing and they are winning every time they killed one of us and we do nothing in return to their love ones. It is time to seek revenge and retribution for the wrong been done to our children at the hands of racist white supremacy Americans and corrupt law enforcement officers who are not protecting us but instead planting drugs, guns in your vehicles, homes, pockets of your clothing but more so shooting you in the back over a dozen times and then claiming that it was in self defense.

If the Taliban and the North Vietnamese Vietcom were able to defeat and pushed back the powerful war machine of America then African American men and woman should be able to do so at a great loss but for a valid cause that will eventually in several years bring these racist white demons to the table to signed a peace deal and reparations for Slavery. You have seen how easy America and the Democratic Party are given every other race everything they asked for and everything they did not asked for with ease; Yet, when African Americans asked for something little we always get a “NO” answer and an excused that make no sense to us and neither to them but they enjoy saying “NO” to black America all the time.

There are many ways for black America to fight back the great racist machine in the United States of America and that include supporting only black organizations and business, sending your children to black owned schools and HBCU’s, putting all your money in black banks, joining black militia groups such as NFAC, Black Panther, Nation of Islam, supporting black newspapers and black online media, purchasing properties in black communities, spending money in black restaurants, helping each other, purchasing guns legally and learning the laws in your state about the ownership and properly securing your legally purchase guns, rifles and ammunitions, joining NAAGA “National African American Gun Association”, listening to pro- black supporters like Dr. Ummar Johnson, Judge Joe Brown, Meche x, Tommy Sotomayor, Attorney Dennis Spurling, Kwame brown, Kaepernick and every other brother and sisters who is physically and psychologically black and willing to fight and die for the black agenda.

(Akiit.com) Established in 1880, The Los Angeles Athletic Club has been operating out of its building at the corner of 7th and Olive Streets in DTLA since 1912. From its outset, the Club was far more than a gym; it was a place where men and women came together to celebrate theatrics, poetry, and the ethos of sound mind in sound body.

In 1913, a group of LAAC members – including L. Frank Baum and Harold Lloyd – founded The Uplifters, an artists’ society within the Club. Their mission was “To Uplift Art and Promote Good Fellowship.” The Uplifters’ current heads (a role termed “The Grand Muscle” by L. Frank Baum) are Suzanne Zoe Joskow and Jennie Taylor Tucker. In 2018, they recognized an opportunity to enact a robust Arts Initiative at the Club:

“We established The Arts Initiative to uphold The Uplifters’ founding motto, while also promoting a contemporary spirit of inclusion and outward-facing engagement with our DTLA neighbors. Ultimately, this is about building an arts community that serves both the LAAC and Los Angeles at large.”

The LAAC is excited to welcome Lauren Halsey, whose work has appeared in a solo installation at MOCA, as part of The Hammer’s “Made in LA”, and who is currently working on a permanent, public installation for LA’s Crenshaw District. As part of her Residency, Halsey has access to a private rooftop studio at the Club, overlooking DTLA. As a full member of the Club, she can continue health and wellness as an integral part of her practice, including her love of basketball.

Of her residency at the Club, Lauren Halsey says:

The Uplifters’ Arts Initiative is expansive beyond the Artist-In-Residence program. We have worked with and will be working with many LA-based artists, including RETNA, Ry Rocklen, X.X.T., and local artisans curated by Unique Markets.

Cory Hathaway, The LAAC’s Assistant General Manager, comments:

“We are excited to see the Uplifters’ Arts Initiative reinvigorate the Club’s century-old legacy as an epicenter for Los Angeles artists. One of the reasons the LAAC has thrived in Downtown LA for over 100 years is that we are always evolving and embracing new ways to serve our community.”

ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES ATHLETIC CLUB:

The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) was the city’s first private club. Throughout the years, LAAC membership have been iconic Angelanos, with names like Lankershim, Chandler, Dockweiler, Doheny, O’Melveny, and Slauson. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, stars such as Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Harold Lloyd, Johnny Weissmuller, and Charlie Chaplin congregated at the Club. Since 1977, the LAAC has been home to the Wooden Award whose recipients include, Marques Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, Candace Parker, Breanna Stewart and most recently, A’ja Wilson and Jalen Brunson.

Over the Club’s history, athletes from the LAAC have earned 97 medals in the Summer Olympics. To this day, the Club is regarded as one of the top athletic facilities in Los Angeles offering an array of activities including basketball, squash, swimming, personal training, and spa services. http://www.laac.com

(Akiit.com) I don’t mind saying that this column represents a grossly understated review of “Discrimination and Disparities,” just published by my longtime friend and colleague Dr. Thomas Sowell. In less than 200 pages, Sowell lays waste to myth after myth not only in the United States but around the globe.

One of those myths is that but for the fact of discrimination, we’d all be proportionately represented in socio-economic characteristics, such as career, income, education and incarceration. The fact of business is that there is no evidence anywhere on earth, at any time in human history, that demonstrates that but for discrimination, there would be proportionate representation in anything by race, sex, nationality or any other human characteristic. Sowell shows that socio-economic outcomes differ vastly among individuals, groups and nations in ways that cannot be explained by any one factor, whether it’s genetics, discrimination or some kind of exploitation.

A study of National Merit Scholarship finalists shows that firstborns are finalists more often than their multiple siblings combined. Data from the U.S., Germany and Britain show that the average IQ of firstborns is higher than the average IQ of their later siblings. Such outcomes challenge those who believe that heredity or one’s environment is the dominant factor in one’s academic performance. Moreover, the finding shows that if there is not equality among people born to the same parents and living under the same roof, why should equality of outcomes be expected under other conditions?

In Chapter 2, Sowell provides evidence that people won’t take racial discrimination at any cost. The higher its cost the less it will be tolerated, and vice versa. One example is segregated seating on municipal transit in the South. Many companies were privately owned, and their decision-makers understood that they could lose profits by offending their black customers by establishing segregated seating. Transportation companies fought against laws mandating racially segregated seating, both politically and in the courts, but lost. Companies even chose to ignore the law. Faced with heavy fines, though, they began to comply with the law.

The point is that the difference between the white transportation owners and the white politicians and segregationists was the transportation company owners had to bear the cost of alienating black riders and the politicians and segregationists didn’t. Sowell broadens his analysis to show that regulated companies and organizations – such as public utilities and nonprofit entities, including colleges and government agencies – will be at the forefront when it’s politically popular to discriminate against blacks but also will be at the forefront when it’s politically popular to discriminate in favor of blacks. Why? Because in either case, they don’t bear the burden of forgone profits.

In Sowell’s chapter titled “The World of Numbers,” he points out what I’m going to call out-and-out dishonesty. In 2000, a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights study pointed out that 44.6 percent of black applicants were turned down for mortgages, while only 22.3 percent of whites were turned down. These and similar statistics led to charges of lending industry discrimination and demands that government do something about it. While the loan rejection rate for whites was 22.3 percent, that for Asians and native Hawaiians was only 12.4 percent. Those statistics didn’t see the light of day. Why? They didn’t fit the racial discrimination narrative. It would have been difficult for the race hustlers to convince the nation that lending institutions were discriminating against not only black applicants but white applicants, as well, in favor of Asian and native Hawaiian applicants.

At several points in the book, Sowell points to the tragedies created in the pursuit of social justice. He gives the example of the Gujaratis expelled from Uganda and the Cubans fleeing Cuba. Many of the Gujaratis arrived in Britain destitute but rose again to prosperity. It’s the same story with the Cubans who came to the U.S. and prospered. By losing their most productive people, both Uganda and Cuba became economic basket cases.

The general public, educators and politicians would benefit immensely from reading “Discrimination and Disparities,” if only to avoid being unknowingly duped.
